Penguin news

We’re getting close to that time of year folks. It’s time for the NHL draft! This years is rather big for us ‘Burghers and Pen fans. Why? Well simple really, our dear city will be hosting this year!

The Mellon is gone. Torn down and just a memory now. The Consol is up and has been running smoothly. It’s an amazing site really. It’s beautiful and green friendly. Which is good for a city that was once so smoggy you couldn’t see 10 feet in front of you. We’re making progress!

Some news came out today though. Some…interesting news really. Tomas Vokun, formerly with the Caps, is now a goal tender for the Penguins. The acquired Vokun from the Washington Capitals in exchange for the Pens 7th round draft pick.

Some little stats on Vokun:

Vokoun, 35, recently completed his 13th NHL season with Washington, posting a 25-17-2 record, 2.51 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and four shutouts in 48 games. One of Vokoun’s shutouts was a 30-save performance in a 1-0 victory over the Penguins on Jan. 11 at the Verizon Center.

So, was this a good move on Shero’s part? They signed Vokun to a 2 year, 2 million dollar contract. Not a problem right? Well, considering Crosby and Staal need resigned this year and Malkin next…will there be enough cash floating around for our 3 stars? If there’s not, who is gone? Not to  mention…now that we have a new goal tender, who’s gone? Is Johnson out since he was only signed to a 2 year deal in 2010? Or is he resigning and heading to the baby Pens until needed? There are so many questions floating around in my brain, I can’t wait to see what happens with this draft! And the season of course.

So, with the draft being in Pittsburgh, does that mean we average Joe Schmoes can go? YES!!!! Yes, we can. There are tickets available to the general public and if you go here you can go buy some. Or, if you’re one of the first 5,000 people starting Tuesday, June 5 at 10 am…you may get some FREE tickets.

GO PENS!

  1. Vokoun is a great signing as it puts Fleury on notice. He now has somoene that can challenge him for the starting position.
Their stats for the past 4 seasons. Vokoun has 23 shutouts to fleury’s 11. A .922 save% to fleury’s .912save% and they have almost exact GAA. He played on a much worse florida panther team. I’m not saying he is better than fleury. I’m saying he can def push him if fleury struggles. I think it will be interesting to see how fleury handles the pressure of having a legit goalie behind him.
Shero will only trade one of them if they want to go. Rumors are Staal would like to play with his brother in Carolina. although Carolina doesn’t really have alot of good chips to trade. Hopefully shero can dump Martin and/or Michalek and free up the cap space that way as the pens are very deep on the blueline.

    • He definitely has impressive stats. I just hope that with picking him up, they can still keep Crosby, Staal and Malkin. I’m excited to see what happens during the draft.
