We’re getting close to that time of year folks. It’s time for the NHL draft! This years is rather big for us ‘Burghers and Pen fans. Why? Well simple really, our dear city will be hosting this year!
The Mellon is gone. Torn down and just a memory now. The Consol is up and has been running smoothly. It’s an amazing site really. It’s beautiful and green friendly. Which is good for a city that was once so smoggy you couldn’t see 10 feet in front of you. We’re making progress!
Some news came out today though. Some…interesting news really. Tomas Vokun, formerly with the Caps, is now a goal tender for the Penguins. The acquired Vokun from the Washington Capitals in exchange for the Pens 7th round draft pick.
Some little stats on Vokun:
Vokoun, 35, recently completed his 13th NHL season with Washington, posting a 25-17-2 record, 2.51 goals-against average, .917 save percentage and four shutouts in 48 games. One of Vokoun’s shutouts was a 30-save performance in a 1-0 victory over the Penguins on Jan. 11 at the Verizon Center.
So, was this a good move on Shero’s part? They signed Vokun to a 2 year, 2 million dollar contract. Not a problem right? Well, considering Crosby and Staal need resigned this year and Malkin next…will there be enough cash floating around for our 3 stars? If there’s not, who is gone? Not to mention…now that we have a new goal tender, who’s gone? Is Johnson out since he was only signed to a 2 year deal in 2010? Or is he resigning and heading to the baby Pens until needed? There are so many questions floating around in my brain, I can’t wait to see what happens with this draft! And the season of course.
So, with the draft being in Pittsburgh, does that mean we average Joe Schmoes can go? YES!!!! Yes, we can. There are tickets available to the general public and if you go here you can go buy some. Or, if you’re one of the first 5,000 people starting Tuesday, June 5 at 10 am…you may get some FREE tickets.
