Poplawski convicted and sentenced

This trial has been long-awaited by us Pittsburghers.

It’s been a long 2 years since this S.O.B was arrested. I don’t know if this news story made national headlines or not, but us ‘burghers will never forget.

Just over 2 years ago on April 4,2009 Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo III were responding to a domestic dispute in the Stanton Heights neighborhood. The police had responded to at least half a dozen of calls at the house over the years. Officer Eric Kelly lived only 4 blocks away from the Poplawski home and so responded even though he was off duty at the time.

The police were getting used to the calls and would normally go in and be the peacemakers between Richard Poplawski and his mother. This time was different though. Poplawski was wearing a bullet proof vest and was armed with an AK-47 rifle, a .22 long rifle and a pistol.

When the door was opened Officer Sciullo was immediately met with gunfire and fatally shot in the head. Another shot struck Officer Mayhle in the head, also killing him.

As Office Kelly arrived he was shot at, at his car and was critically wounded. Fortunately he was able to call for help. Unfortunately he would not survive the wounds. The next officer to arrive on the scene was Timothy McManaway who was shot in the hand as he attempted to assist Officer Kelly.

On June 26, 2011, over 2 years after the shoot out, Richard Poplawski was found guilty in the murder of all 3 officers.

Today, June 28,2011 he was sentenced to death.

I’m not a big advocate of the death penalty. I do believe he should be left to rot in jail until the day he dies, but I wasn’t on the jury. Pennsylvania has not executed anyone in a very long time. It is entirely possible that with appeals and more court dates he could wind up spending the rest of his life on death row being looked at as a hero to the scum who are behind bars. Hopefully the guards will be able to make things a bit more miserable for him while he waits to meet his maker.

Do I believe he should be in a normal jail? Or minimum security? Absolutely not!

That man should be in locked away in a 4 x 4 cell and receive the bare necessities to stay alive.
